The nebula was quiet, but Admiral Elara Vance knew the silence was deceptive. The enemy had retreated, but their ghost fleet was still out there, hidden in the gas clouds. She had seen their ships on her sensors-faint, flickering, like phantoms.

"Command, this is Vance. I'm tracking a ghost fleet."

"Copy, Vance. They're using cloaking technology. Be careful."

Elara adjusted her course, following the faint energy trail. The ghost fleet was fast, but she was patient.

"There," she said. "I've got them."

She fired a volley at the lead ship, and its cloak flickered, revealing its hull.

"Contact," she said. "I'm engaging."

The ghost fleet scattered, but she pursued, picking them off one by one.

"Command, the ghost fleet is destroyed."

"Copy, Vance. Good work. You've eliminated a serious threat."

Elara turned her fighter toward home, the nebula closing in behind her. The enemy had tried to use stealth against them, but she had seen through their trick.

She knew there would be more ghost fleets, more cloaked ships. But she was learning to see them, to track them, to destroy them.

The galaxy was a battlefield of shadows, and she was becoming a master of the hunt. She would keep pursuing the ghosts through the nebulae until the enemy had nowhere left to hide. The End.

The mail arrived at the FOB on a Tuesday, a canvas bag full of letters and care packages. Captain Elena Vasquez sat on her cot, her hands trembling as she sorted through the stack. Bills. Magazines. A letter from her mother. And then, at the bottom, a small envelope with Marcus's handwriting.

She opened it carefully, the paper soft from being folded and refolded.

My Dearest Elena,

I'm writing this in the kitchen, at the table where we used to eat breakfast. The coffee is cold. The apartment is too quiet without you. I sleep on your side of the bed because it still smells like you.

I think about you every day. Every hour. Every minute. I think about your laugh, the way it fills a room. I think about your hands, the way they feel on my face. I think about the mornings we had, the mornings we'll have again.

Please come home. Please be careful. Please know that I'm here, waiting, always waiting.

Yours,
Marcus

Elena read it twice, then again. She traced the letters with her finger, imagining him sitting at that table, the dog at his feet, the sun streaming through the window.

"Good news?" her wingman, Lieutenant Chen, asked from the next cot.

Elena folded the letter, tucked it into her breast pocket, next to her heart. "The best kind."

She thought about Marcus, about the kitchen, about the life she'd left behind. She thought about the missions ahead, the danger she'd face, the months still to go.

She touched the letter, felt the warmth of it against her chest.

"Yeah," she said finally. "The best kind."

That night, she wrote back:

Marcus,

I read your letter. I cried on every page. I love you on every page.

I'm coming home. And when I do, I'm going to make you breakfast, and we're going to sit at that table, and I'm never leaving again.

Wait for me.

Yours,
Elena

She folded it, tucked it into an envelope, and added it to the mailbag.

Somewhere in Nevada, a man who loved her was probably reading her old letters, waiting for the day she'd walk through the door.

Soon, she thought. Soon.
